Alberta

Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (Formerly known as the AINP)

Alberta is a wealthy province known for its abundant natural resources and scenic landscapes. Situated in Western Canada, it includes two of the country’s largest cities, Calgary and Edmonton, and is the most populated among the three Prairie provinces. Alberta is also widely recognized for its stunning natural attractions, including well-known national parks such as Banff and Jasper.

The province manages the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), previously called the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program. Through this program, individuals with the appropriate skills and work experience that match Alberta’s labour market needs may be eligible to receive a provincial nomination certificate from Alberta.

Foreign workers currently employed in Alberta, as well as international graduates from recognized post-secondary institutions in the province, may qualify to apply for a provincial nomination through the Alberta Opportunity Stream.

Application Fee: CAD $1,500

How the process works

Applicants who wish to apply under the Alberta Opportunity Stream must submit their application online via the AAIP portal. Once the application is started, candidates will be required to upload supporting documents based on their individual profile and pay the required application fee through the online system.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, applicants must generally meet the following conditions:

  • Hold a valid work permit at the time of application
  • Be employed in an approved occupation in Alberta that aligns with their work experience
  • Meet the required language level of at least Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 or CLB 5, depending on the job category
  • Have completed a minimum of high school education
  • Possess either:
    • At least 12 months of full-time work experience in Alberta within the past 18 months, or
    • At least 24 months of combined work experience in Canada within the last 30 months

Alberta Express Entry Stream

The Alberta Express Entry Stream is designed for candidates who already have an active profile in Canada’s federal Express Entry system. The province selects individuals who have established connections to Alberta and who possess skills that can support the province’s economic development.

Applicants who receive a provincial nomination through Alberta are awarded an additional 600 points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). This significant boost greatly increases the likelihood of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in a future Express Entry draw.

Application Fee: CAD $1,500

How the process works

This stream operates on an invitation-only basis. Eligible Express Entry candidates may be issued a Notification of Interest (NOI) directly by Alberta through the federal Express Entry system.

Once invited, applicants are given a limited timeframe to confirm their interest in being considered under this stream. If they are chosen to proceed, they will receive instructions from the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) to submit a full application for provincial nomination through the online portal, along with all required supporting documents.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must generally:

  • Be active in the federal Express Entry pool
  • Indicate a genuine interest in settling permanently in Alberta
  • Be working in an occupation that supports Alberta’s economic priorities and workforce needs
  • Have a minimum CRS score of 300

Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway

The Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway is a priority immigration stream designed for skilled technology professionals who already have an active profile in Canada’s federal Express Entry system and qualify under the Alberta Express Entry Stream. This pathway offers faster processing for candidates working in the tech sector.

Applicants who appear to meet the eligibility criteria must first submit an online intake form through the AAIP portal. The province then reviews the information to confirm eligibility. If the candidate qualifies, they are invited by Alberta to proceed with a full application for provincial nomination.

Application Fee: CAD $1,500

How the process works

To begin under this expedited stream, candidates must either be currently employed by or hold a valid job offer from an Alberta-based technology employer in an approved tech occupation, while also meeting the Alberta Express Entry Stream requirements.

Eligible candidates submit an online application form through the AAIP website. If they satisfy the criteria, they will receive an official invitation from AAIP to complete their provincial nomination application by uploading all required documents via the online portal.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must generally:

  • Have an active profile in the federal Express Entry pool
  • Show intent to permanently settle in Alberta
  • Hold a minimum CRS score of 300
  • Be employed in, or have a job offer for, an eligible technology occupation in Alberta

Rural Renewal Stream

The Rural Renewal Stream is designed for foreign nationals who have secured a full-time job offer from an employer located in a rural community within Alberta.

Application Fee: CAD $1,500

How the process works

This is a community-supported immigration pathway. Applicants must first gain backing from a participating rural community in Alberta. These designated communities actively recruit and support foreign workers, and employers within these areas provide job offers to suitable candidates.

Once the community confirms that the applicant meets its requirements, a letter of support is issued. The candidate can then proceed to submit their application to the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP).

Eligibility requirements

Applicants are generally expected to:

  • Hold a valid, full-time job offer or employment contract from an Alberta employer in an approved occupation within a designated rural community
  • Have at least 12 months of full-time work experience in a qualifying occupation within the last 18 months (experience may be gained in Alberta, elsewhere in Canada, or internationally)
  • Meet the required language proficiency standards
  • Possess at least a high school level education equivalent to Canadian standards
  • Demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves and accompanying family members in the designated community
Farm Stream (Self-Employed Farmer Stream)

The Farm Stream is intended for individuals who wish to establish or purchase a farming business in Alberta as self-employed farmers.

Application Fee: CAD $3,500

How the process works

Applicants must begin by submitting a detailed business proposal to the Alberta government. The proposal is reviewed in consultation with Alberta Agriculture and related authorities to assess its feasibility and alignment with the province’s agricultural priorities.

If the proposal receives approval, candidates are then required to complete the full application process by submitting all necessary forms and documents to both the Alberta government and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must typically:

  • Have experience in farm management
  • Demonstrate adequate financial capacity, including a minimum investment of CAD $500,000
  • Provide a well-developed and documented business plan outlining the proposed investment

Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

The International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream in Alberta is designed for international students who have completed studies at an approved post-secondary institution in Alberta and wish to start or manage a business in the province.

Application Fee: CAD $3,500

How the process works

Applicants must begin by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the AAIP online system. Each applicant is assigned an EOI score within approximately 30 days. Candidates with the highest rankings may then be invited to submit a full Business Application.

Once invited, applicants must complete and submit their Business Application within 90 days, along with all required supporting documents.

Eligibility requirements

To qualify, applicants generally must:

  • Have completed at least two years of full-time study in Alberta
  • Hold a valid Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) at the time of application
  • Achieve a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 7
  • Either establish a new business or take over and actively operate an existing one with a minimum ownership stake of 34%

Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

The Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream (also known as the Foreign Graduate Start-Up pathway) is intended for internationally educated graduates who want to establish a start-up business in Alberta and ultimately pursue Canadian permanent residency.

Application Fee: CAD $3,500

How the process works

Applicants must first collaborate with a designated service provider. If the candidate meets the program requirements, the agency issues a formal recommendation letter along with an assessment report on the proposed business concept.

After receiving these documents, the applicant submits an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the AAIP online portal, including the recommendation letter and the agency’s business evaluation report.

Approved designated agencies include:

  • Empowered Startups
  • Platform Calgary

Eligibility requirements

Applicants are generally required to:

  • Have at least six months of experience in actively managing or owning a business
  • Present a detailed business plan with financial projections
  • Hold a post-secondary credential from outside Canada, supported by an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), completed within the last 10 years
  • Deliver a short 10-minute slide presentation outlining the business concept and investment potential
  • Meet a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 5
  • Maintain ownership of at least 34% if the business is located in an urban centre, or at least 51% if it is outside Calgary or Edmonton
  • Invest a minimum of $100,000 for businesses in urban areas, or $50,000 for regional locations (higher investment may improve scoring). Funding may come from personal savings, Canadian financial institutions, venture capital, or angel investors
  • Obtain a recommendation letter from an AAIP-approved agency
  • Demonstrate sufficient financial resources to establish the business and support themselves and any accompanying family members in Canada

Rural Entrepreneur Stream

The Rural Entrepreneur Stream is designed for individuals who intend to establish or purchase a business in rural areas of Alberta.

Application Fee: CAD $3,500

How the process works

This is a community-based immigration pathway. Applicants must first connect with a participating rural community in Alberta and carry out an exploratory visit to understand local business opportunities.

Following the visit, the candidate is required to submit a detailed business proposal outlining the intended venture and how it will benefit the community. If the proposal is supported, the community issues a formal endorsement letter.

With this support, the applicant can then proceed to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the AAIP portal for further consideration.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants are generally expected to:

  • Have at least 3 years of experience as an active business owner/manager, or at least 4 years of senior management experience within the past 10 years
