Overview

Express Entry now includes category-based selection draws designed to invite candidates from six targeted groups to apply for Canadian permanent residence.

These category-based draws operate alongside other Express Entry draw types managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), including program-specific draws that focus on candidates within a particular Express Entry immigration program.

Regardless of the draw type, invitations are generally issued to the highest-ranked candidates in the Express Entry pool based on their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Category-based and program-specific draws may also apply additional filters to select candidates who meet specific criteria for that draw.

In addition to meeting the basic eligibility requirements for one of the three Express Entry programs, candidates must also satisfy additional conditions to be eligible for category-based selection, such as:

  • At least 12 months of eligible work experience (which may be continuous or non-continuous) within the past three years in an approved occupation, either in Canada or abroad, unless otherwise specified
  • Meeting required French language proficiency levels (for the French-language category)
  • Fulfilling any additional criteria outlined in the ministerial instructions for that specific draw

Currently, Express Entry categories include ten groups, three of which require Canadian work experience:

  • Physicians with Canadian work experience
  • Senior managers with Canadian work experience
  • Researchers with Canadian work experience
  • Skilled military personnel*
  • Healthcare and social services occupations
  • Education occupations
  • STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Strong French-language proficiency

Skilled Military Recruits Category

The Skilled Military Recruits category has more detailed eligibility requirements due to the nature of the profession. To qualify, candidates must:

  • Be a Foreign Skilled Military Applicant (FSMA)
  • Be a foreign national currently serving in an officially recognized military force
  • Have a minimum of 10 consecutive years of military service
  • Possess relevant training and work experience aligned with the duties of eligible occupations
  • Hold a valid job offer from the Canadian Armed Forces, which must:
    • Be for full-time, continuous employment in Canada for at least three years
    • Correspond to NOC codes 40042, 42102, or 43204
    • Be issued by the Canadian Forces Recruiting Group
  • Have at least a two-year Canadian post-secondary qualification or an equivalent foreign credential assessed through an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
  • Meet all additional requirements specified in the relevant Express Entry draw instructions
